Molasses Brown Bread
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup warm water (110 °F)
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tbsp yeast
- 3/8 cup Crosby’s Fancy Molasses
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
Directions
- In a small bowl dissolve sugar in the warm water, stir in the yeast, and leave for 5-10 minutes.
- In a large bowl mix the molasses, rolled oats, butter and salt.
- Add the boiling water and stir the mixture.
- Stir in the cold water and yeast mixture.
- Add flour gradually and scrape dough onto a floured surface to knead in the final cup of flour (or use a stand mixer with a dough hook).
- Place the dough in a large bread pan that have been well greased or lined with parchment paper.
- Cover the pan with a dishtowel and set in a warm place to rise until almost double in size (about 1 1/2 hours).
- Remove dishtowel and bake at 325 °F for about an hour.
- When ready, remove from oven and let cool about five minutes before removing from pans to cool.
